'The flavour's everywhere.'

Safe to say, we were slightly hungover this morning. It was a different kind of hot today, you could feel the pressure in the air. Storms were a'brewin.

We had arranged to meet up with two girls, Emily and Ariel (family and friend of Jeff, who we're staying with in San Francisco) and at 12 we waited outside the hostel for them. We were excited to meet some locals our age and the girls didn't disappoint! They were more than lovely, picking us up and taking us out for lunch. We headed to an area of New Orleans we had never been to, to a place which apparently sold the best Poboys in town, Obama had even visited! Poboy (poor boy) is a traditional Louisiana and New Orleans sandwich. The place had a great atmosphere, and was really relaxed. I ordered a BBQ Beef poboy whilst Kitty threw the guy on the till by ordering a Rueben poboy but without the bread. He may have been confused, but he served her up a feast of corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese with sweet potato fries. She is literally still licking her lips reciting the ingredients to me!!

As we got back in the car, the storm finally arrived, I'm talking thunder and lightning and torrential rain. Ironically, Emily and Ariel were next taking us to get a Snowball, which is shaved ice flavoured with syrup, another New Orleans must have! Ignoring the rain we enjoyed a lemon meringue and a strawberry shortcake cream Snowball. Emily had a wedding cake flavour Snowball which was bright blue! Upon realising that the Snowball wasn't just going to taste of ice, Kitty said something along the lines of, 'the flavours everywhere!' it was pretty impressive, they just poured syrup on top of a serving of shaved ice and it somehow managed to flavour the whole thing.

Emily and Ariel then took us on a drive down St Charles and through part of the Garden District near where the university is, and where the houses are absolutely amazing, before dropping us back of at the hostel. It was so kind of them to take the time to show us around and we had a really good few hours.

We were absolutely knackered this afternoon and both of us had a nap (I'm sure we are turning into grannies!!!!). Whilst cooking dinner this evening, we got talking to three Australian girls and ended up sitting with them and Mike, the guy who runs the place, having a drink and listening to music outside for hours. We introduced Mike, who is of similar musical tastes to us, to several songs which 'would significantly change his life.' Very chilled. We were later also joined by a random guy called Brian, who I think does some of the hostels airport shuttle runs. He seemed really nice, and told us his family were from Beverley in Yorkshire and that out of the English football teams, he supported Crystal Palace!! What a guy!

So somehow it's ten past one in the morning, obviously the nap gave us a new lease for life! We are looking forward to tomorrow when we are going on a whirlwind tour of New Orleans and the surrounding area with Chris Saunders, of Newark Jazz Festival fame.

    1. All we get is sunshine here it seems of late. And about 70 degrees. I'd love to have experience your sturm und drang and a Snowball (when I live in N'awlins such a thing did not exist nor any of those bizarre poboys you describe). All of you look lovely in the pictures though!
