'I just swallowed a fly!'

Sadly, we were only to be staying in our luxury suite for one night and in the morning were up and ready to leave again by 8am.

It seemed to take forever to get out of Scottsdale. After stopping at a 7/11, a Walmart, and a T-mobile shop we finally got on the road. We still don't know exactly why we stopped at the phone shop for one of the Norwegian boys, Albun, but Greg made a comment about it being so he could 'contact his people in Norway' so the whole rest of the day, whenever we saw him on his phone we creased up laughing, imagining him as the leader of some strange Norwegian cult at the age of 20!

Arizona is epic, we drove through the most amazing landscapes: deserts, mountains, at one point we even ended up on what used to be Route 66 wahey!

En route to the Grand Canyon we stopped at a place called Montezuma Castle which is basically a stone house carved into a rock face. It has nothing to do with Montezuma and it's not a castle. Apparently it was named after Montezuma because that was a place that had been discovered around the same time. Logical?

It was home to an ancient civilisation who lived and farmed there until the 1400s when they suddenly mysteriously disappeared. It was pretty impressive, so we took some photos, had some lunch and went on with our lives.

Around 5.15 we finally reached our campsite at the Grand Canyon, we're camping somewhere on the South rim. This is a real campsite, not like the one we were at in San Diego, we're literally in the middle of the woods and there are showers but you have to pay for them. Ultimate scam!

After setting up our tents, I was entrusted to lead the team to Yavapai Point so we could all see the sunset. Greg, our guide, had whisked Kitty off in the group van to buy us all pizza and find her a gluten free alternative, which ended up being tacos. Luckily, Greg and Kitty found the rest of us as we were halfway to Yavapai and we all got a lift!

The sunset was absolutely incredible. The view out over the canyon was insane and the colours of the sunset only intensified it. The sun actually set really quickly, you could literally see it disappearing down behind the opposite side of the canyon. Lots of photos were taken of this of course!

After sunset, when it started to get dark, we piled back into the party van and headed back to camp. On the way we heard an unexpected and strange noise from the back of the bus. This was followed by Robin, the guy from Sweden, saying 'I just swallowed a fly!' which had the whole bus in hysterics for a good few minutes. We're easily amused.

Once back at camp, since we weren't allowed to light campfires, we sat around the table with a lamp. Robin taught me, Kitty, Trinie, Ann, Andre and Peter how to play blackjack in preparation for Vegas. Lets just say Vegas isn't ready.

Tomorrow (Thursday) we are going to have a chill out day, i.e. wake up when we want and find our own way to the visitors centre to investigate what walks around the canyon we want to go on.
