Yesterday (Monday) we woke up in our tent in San Diego. It was a day for doing whatever we wanted, some people chose to go to the zoo for example, but Kitty and I and two others, Andre and Ann, opted to spend the day at Mission Beach, with the intent of chilling out and working on our tans.
This was not to go as planned. There we were dropped off at the beach around 10.30. It was freezing. There was no sign of the sun, and the waves were mega rough, although thus perfect for surfing. We asked a local where we could find good coffee, and they directed us to a really sweet little cafe slightly back from the beach where we chilled for a couple of hours drinking coffee, catching up in various Internet related things and hoping the weather would clear up. Needless to say, it didn't.
Eventually we gave in and went down to the beach anyway. Kitty and Ann braved the freezing water, and were promptly reprimanded by a lifeguard because apparently we were on the section of the beach reserved purely for surfing. Discrimination....
On a wander to find ice cream we somehow lost Andre and Ann and ended up spending the latter part of the afternoon just sitting on the beach (the right part this time) discussing life, the world and the universe as we tend to do. Can I just state, for the record, that the sun never showed its stupid face, and that I spent the whole day with my cardigan on, shivering. Yet me being me genuinely forgot to put sun cream on my face so I somewhat resemble a tomato. Great. Luckily we've spent the whole of today in the van travelling to Phoenix so I can stay out of the sun. Honestly!
The evening was also uneventful apart from that we cooked Sloppy Joes for dinner at the camp! We didn't stay up ridiculously late drinking again last night because of the long hot drive we knew we had today, but we did indulge in a cheeky glass of vodka and lemonade, courtesy of Andre.
San Diego seems like a really nice, chilled place. The houses and the beach are really cool, but it's a shame it was such a cold cloudy day and we didn't get to see it in all it's glory. We did drive over an epic bridge, however, and see a huge naval battleship just casually making it's way up the river. There is a huge naval base in San Diego, as in the base is the size of a large town. Americans seem to be very much into the whole military thing.
We're highly enjoying entertaining everyone with our vast array of English accents. The Barry accent in particular, for those who know it, is going down a treat.
Finally, the title of this post is in reference to my tomato face from the non existent sun/warmth and the anchor is the anchor shape tan Kitty has on the top of her back where her back slightly burnt during the first couple of days. So with our voices and strange tan lines we make quite the comedy duo!
I've never been to San Diego when it has been anything other than freezing. You must plan to go to and spend time in La Jolla at some future date though. Just lovely and the Institute there is amazing! Jeff
