Opening Ceremony Chunder Party!

When I woke up I knew it was going to go one of two ways, either I would jump out of bed feeling fine, or I wouldn't be able to move for fear of being sick. Unfortunately, it was the latter. Having felt fine and sober when I finally got to bed at 3am, after staying to look after Liz, I wasn't expecting to feel so ill. Apparently a lot can change in 6 hours...

Eventually, I ventured out of bed and made it to the bathroom where I saw some familiar feet underneath the first toilet cubicle. After saying a weak, 'Maaaate', I slunk into the cubicle next to Kitty's and we both sat on the floor in nauseating silence. We can all guess what happened next, but all I'll say is that vomiting in unison is a whole new level of friendship!

When we both returned to our bunk beds we found Jessie, our Scottish friend we had made the previous evening, had woken up and was also feeling less than fresh. Her two friends who hadn't been out with us the previous evening had already gone out for the day, so she gladly joined in our forlorn hungover party, and we all lay in our beds discussing the events of the night; she had ended up at a strip club with two random Scottish boys also from the hostel.

I really thought I was going to die, I felt that bad, and I knew the only way to feel any better was to try and sleep it off. So whilst Kitty and Jessie braved a mission to find food, I remained in bed and tried to sleep. In this time, I made friends with the maintenance man who came in to check the air conditioning, and the woman from reception who came up to check if the empty beds were made. So much for sleeping.

Kitty and Jessie eventually returned accompanied by Liz, who was amused to see that the tables had turned and it was now me feeling rough! By this point I started to come alive, and we were all ridiculously excited to watch the Olympic opening ceremony, which we thought was being broadcast at 4pm.

After venturing out into the sunlight to purchase some snacks for this Olympic party, we eagerly headed back to the hostel, ready to assume positions for watching the ceremony, only to find that NBC weren't showing it live and it wouldn't be on until 7.30pm. We were not impressed. Especially as we were all so tired we didn't know if we could last until midnight when it finished.

To pass the time, we watched the film Get Him To The Greek, which amused us for a good hour an a half. We also cooked some food; Kitty and I had some frankfurters, mashed potatoes and beans and the others had tortillas.

Eventually, 7.30 arrived and we were ready in the best seats. A lot of other people from the hostel joined us to watch it, so it turned into quite the event!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed, and were very proud to be British by the end. Already, the American commentators were doing our heads in, being patronising and biased, and NBC conveniently put adverts on every ten minutes or so, which kind of ruined the magic of the whole thing. We later found out that NBC replaced the 7/7 memorial section of the ceremony with a boring interview with their golden boy, Michael Phelps, which is, quite frankly, disgusting and disrespectful. If we had ever dared replace a 9/11 memorial with anything, the Americans would be hitting us with nuclear bombs within minutes!

On a more positive note, things we most enjoyed were the Queen and James Bond, the giant Voldemort (for obvious reasons), the Mary Poppins', the NHS references (in your face USA!), Beckham on a boat, the lighting of the Olympic cauldron thing and the atmosphere of the whole ceremony, it all flowed so well! Hats off to Danny Boyle! We weren't so keen on olde Sir Paul at the end though, it became all a bit of an anti-climax, because we were hoping the Spice Girls might turn up! We'll be pretty gutted if they don't make an appearance in the closing ceremony either!

The clips of London made us all miss England, it really is a strange feeling knowing half the world are all in your country and you're not, but I wouldn't want to be trying to get around in London for the next couple of weeks for sure!

When the opening party was over, we all headed to bed pretty quickly, excited to get a proper night's sleep and wake up feeling human again!
