A Monumental Day

Today we did everything, literally, everything. Every monument in the world was documented on our cameras with some form of humorous pose on front of it. Well maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration... but we did a lot!

Liz, Amy and I went straight to the good stuff, any building we passed that looked vaguely fancy - we photographed, glanced at the information about it and stared at it pensively.

We even took photos of two lions thinking they were some historical statues... they were just some cheap props outside a pub #awkward.

We tried and failed to spot Obama, although some guy from the hostel saw his dog on the lawn of the Whit House!! The heat is intense here and with each walk between monuments giving little shade, by late afternoon we were done. We even hopped into the Air and Space museum to have an air con party, then we realised it was actually quite interesting, it had an IMAX theatre in it that was showing 'Batman', so we obviously booked tickets to see it again the next day. Why not? We also had a food game of spot the cray amongst the crowds in the museum (i.e. posed amongst them and took pictures).

Some of our fave monuments/things were the Washington monument which is incredibly phallic (standard America), the Holocaust/WW2 memorial which is beautiful as well as being very peaceful and of course the Lincoln Memorial, although the reflection pool was closed so the view from the top of the steps wasn't as beaut as we thought it would be.

Washington is a beautiful place although there are road blocks everywhere and police with guns at every street corner. It seams that Washington is purely built to look good on tv but in reality the areas surrounding the main city are a far cry from the perfect white stone monuments and shiny business offices that dominate the centre.

After a long day of being tourists Liz had a huge urge for dim sum, we are always up for some chinese so happily headed over to china town (which is right by our hostel).

We filled up on Chinese before running back to catch the start of the Olympics - we're addicted! Whilst watching we were joined by two guys from South Africa, one of which used to live in Uganda and we were also joined (unfortunately) by a cray cray american man.

He be so cray. He kept telling us the result of the show we were about to watch and being overly patriotic. I was not his hugest fan so at one point turned around and said, quite simply 'you're a prick!'. Liz and Amy were in stiches but cray obviously didn't understand this was a hint to stop talking.

Somehow we all ended up getting in to a deep political debate which was rather amusing. It was here that Hugh joined us... He sat next to Liz, she knew the stench was coming...

I took his arrival as a chance to sneak up to bed a bit earlier to prepare for the smell. In the roomI found Sophie and Sam who had spent the day with him. We had a moment where we all looked at eachother before I said 'the shoes...' they both cracked up laughing and Sam even started pretending to wretch! We made an action plan and Sophie gave me there travel sized febreeze, I was going to pretend to put body spray on before bed... But really would aim it at the shoes.

I gave the room a quick spritz to lessen the blow, as he walked in and kicked the shoes off we all had to look away not to laugh/chunder. I sprayed the febreeze which sent Sophie into a fit of giggles and tried to sleep before I chocked on the perfumed stench!!
